What is Cardiac Rehab and Who Qualifies for It?

Cardiac rehabilitation, often referred to as cardiac rehab, is a medically supervised program designed to improve the cardiovascular health of individuals recovering from heart-related conditions or procedures. The program combines exercise, education, and support to help patients regain their strength, prevent future heart issues, and enhance their overall quality of life.

What Does Cardiac Rehab Involve?

A typical cardiac rehab program consists of three main components:

  1. Supervised Exercise: Customized exercise routines are tailored to each patient’s specific needs. These are designed to improve cardiovascular fitness and strength under the guidance of trained professionals, such as an exercise physiologist near me.
  2. Education on Heart-Healthy Living: Patients learn about managing risk factors like high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and weight. Nutritional counseling and lifestyle modification strategies are also emphasized.
  3. Emotional and Psychological Support: Dealing with a heart condition can be stressful. Cardiac rehab programs often include counseling or support groups to help patients cope with the emotional aspects of recovery.

Who Qualifies for Cardiac Rehab?

Cardiac rehab is typically recommended for individuals who have experienced or undergone:

  • A heart attack
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Angioplasty or stent placement
  • Heart failure
  • Valve repair or replacement
  • Stable angina

Your healthcare provider will determine if you’re a suitable candidate for cardiac rehab based on your specific condition and recovery goals.
